1. The current signal sits at the ankle
GQ’s 8 September fall forecast identifies colourful socks as a live menswear move, part of a gradual opening away from years of dusty neutrals. Who What Wear had already connected that shift to Ralph Lauren’s A/W 2026 menswear runway. Nino Cappello does not read this as a case for a multicoloured outfit. The useful idea is the small dose: between a decisive skirt hem and a quiet leather shoe, colour can make a familiar composition personal without disturbing its authority.
2. The visible height matters
The amount of colour is as important as the hue. A knee sock may form a complete vertical beneath a knee-length pleated skirt. Under a utility wrap, cobalt becomes a more compact calf panel. An upper-calf hem leaves only a narrow saffron band; the longer Paris column allows a few centimetres of emerald above the boot. The sock should neither slip nor finish across the widest point of the calf. Firm ribbing, a flat toe seam and a welt that holds without biting are functional elements of the silhouette.
Colour need not be large. It needs to land precisely.
3. Four colours, four jobs
Oxblood warms charcoal while preserving its formality. Cobalt gives Copenhagen a lucid counterpoint to ink navy and olive-black. Saffron brings light to sand, tobacco and espresso, provided the tone is deep and mineral rather than neon. Emerald reveals itself slowly against midnight and black, making it apt for evening. Each colour appears only once in the outfit. It is not echoed in a scarf, bag or pocket square. Restraint gives the accent its force.
4. Shoe and hem make the frame
Wallpaper* identifies flat footwear and slimmer lines among A/W 2026’s defining moves. That combination is particularly useful with a men’s skirt: Derby, lug Derby, low suede shoe and side-zip boot give the strip of colour a clean boundary. The stronger the sock, the quieter the leather and sole. Polished black turns oxblood formal; matte tread grounds cobalt; dark suede softens saffron; a slim boot makes emerald read as a seam of light. Hem, sock and shoe should be designed as one proportion.
5. Men Can: colour without explanation
Dries Van Noten and Thom Browne offer real men’s kilts and pleated skirts within current collections, while AP places more open gender codes at the centre of modern menswear. Neither skirt nor colour therefore needs an alibi. Masculine construction can live in the shoulder, waistband, cloth weight and assured stance; it does not depend on banning vivid hues. Nor does it diminish feminine, queer or other expressions. Men Can means making one small decision with intent and wearing it as naturally as any classic.
